Background information:
this account was created in Nov 2019. The K-pop fandom then was already familiar with the existence of 홈페이지마스터, in short 홈마, which means homepage master, or in Chinese “站姐”. They are mostly Korean fangirls who runs fanpages by sharing photos and videos they take, sometimes selling self-designed goods.
I followed 3 main principles when running the ac: memes, trends, and relatability.
Memes
I believe I was the first 홈마 to utilise memes. Back in 2019, and perhaps now still, 홈마 gives an impression of being distant and even cold with most only posting photos. I decided to jump out of this comfort zone by starting to use memes in an attempt to drive interaction and provide a sense of freshness. It was successful as it was unprecedented and resonates with international fans, who are most avid users of the platform on top of Korean fans.

Trends
Besides memes, posting content that rided on trends was one of the strategies. They also reinforce the tone/personality of the page that established with the use of memes.
Posts shown on left were made similar to the posts that went viral on the platform at that time.

Relatibility
Keeping the account relatable was one of the most effective ways of differentiating the page with others.
There were often inside jokes of the fandom incorporated in the captions to evoke greater sense of resonance.
Some of my photos and posts were featured by a Kpop news outlet, Koreaboo

This account faced challenges right off the start as the Covid pandemic broke out. Offline events were cancelled and sustaining engagement was difficult without new photos. I tried to tackle the issue by lowering the frequency of posting, meanwhile, I started an Instagram account and utilized the story function to engage with the audience in other ways, e.g. Q&A sections.

Q&A sections were held based on the observation that 홈마 is considered mysterious by the K-pop community.
